Car 211 Returns: A Century-Old Railroad Legend Restored

August 1 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

After years of meticulous restoration, the historic Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge Car 211 is making its triumphant return. This 1881 railroad car, which once carried passengers and freight between Lake City and Sapinero until 1933, has been painstakingly brought back to life—at a cost exceeding $400,000—through workshops at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado.

On Saturday, August 1, the Hinsdale County Museum will celebrate Car 211’s homecoming with a gala dedication featuring a ceremonial ribbon cutting, expert-led tours of the restored railcar, and 45-minute lectures on Lake City’s railroad history. A stunning display of railroad paraphernalia and Car 211’s acquisition and restoration journey will also be unveiled in the Museum’s Transportation Building
